Digital Passport Photo Submission: Which Countries Accept Online Photos?

The global trend toward digital biometric photo submission has accelerated since 2020. Most major passport-issuing countries now accept or actively prefer a digital photo upload over a printed copy. However, a number of important exceptions remain — most notably Germany's Reisepass and Personalausweis, which still require in-person biometric capture. This guide maps the current state of digital photo acceptance across eight countries.

Germany BSI PointID — Important Exception

Germany's BSI PointID standard requires in-person verification for Reisepass and Personalausweis. Online digital photo submission is NOT accepted for these documents. Biometric capture must take place at a registered authority (Bürgeramt, Passbehörde, or Deutsche Post biometric partner).

Technical Requirements for Digital Photo Submissions

While each country's portal has specific requirements, the following technical standards apply broadly across all digital submission systems:

  • File format: JPEG (JPG). PNG and TIFF are rejected by most portals.
  • Colour space: sRGB. CMYK files will produce incorrect colours after portal conversion.
  • Resolution: Minimum 300 DPI for a print-equivalent 35×45mm image (approximately 827×1063 pixels). Many portals also state a minimum pixel count — 600×800 or higher is a safe target.
  • File size: Generally 500 KB to 10 MB depending on the portal. UK GOV.UK accepts up to 10 MB; Australia's myPassport is stricter. Avoid files under 50 KB, as heavy compression creates visible artefacts.
  • Background: White or very light grey for most countries. Singapore and some US portals require pure white only.
  • No filters: Smoothing, beautification, and colour correction filters are prohibited by all digital submission portals. The face must appear naturally lit.

Country Notes: What Makes Each System Different

United Kingdom

The UK's GOV.UK online renewal service guides applicants through taking a photo with their smartphone. The portal runs automated checks for background, face position, and image quality before accepting the submission. Photos must be taken within the last month — stricter than the usual 6-month rule.

United States

The US Passport Renewal App (for eligible adult renewals) accepts a digital photo. The US photo standard is 51×51mm (2×2 inch) — not the ICAO 35×45mm used in most other countries. DS-160 visa applicants must also upload a digital photo at 51×51mm to the CEAC portal.

Australia

Australia's myPassport portal (passports.gov.au) accepts digital photos for online renewal. The photo must meet DFAT's 35×45mm specification. The portal includes automated face detection and quality checks. Guarantor/countersignatory rules still apply and must be noted in the application.

Canada

Canada uses a non-standard 50×70mm format — the largest of any major passport-issuing country. The IRCC online portal accepts a digital crop of this size. The photo must be taken within the last 6 months and a guarantor signature or professional certification may still be required for first-time applications.

Switzerland

Switzerland does not have a single national online portal. Whether digital photos are accepted depends on the applicant's Gemeinde (municipality). Some larger cities accept digital photos via their local portal; smaller Gemeinden typically require the applicant to attend in person with a printed photo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I submit my passport photo online in Germany?

Not for a German Reisepass or Personalausweis. Germany's BSI PointID standard requires in-person biometric capture at a registered authority. Online digital photo upload is accepted for German driving licences and Aufenthaltstitel (residence permits) in some Ausländerbehörden.

Which countries offer fully online passport renewal with a digital photo?

The UK, USA (for eligible renewals), Australia, and Canada all offer fully online passport renewal processes that include a digital photo upload. France offers online renewal via the ANTS portal for eligible applicants.

What file format should I use for a digital passport photo submission?

JPEG is the standard format accepted by all digital passport portals. Use the sRGB colour space (not CMYK). The file size should be under 10 MB for most portals. Resolution should be at least 600 DPI when printed, or at least 900×1200 pixels as a digital file.

Does the UK accept digital passport photos for online renewals?

Yes. The UK's online passport renewal service (GOV.UK) accepts a digital photo submitted via smartphone. The photo must meet HMPO requirements: white or light grey background, plain clothing, no glasses, neutral expression, taken within the last month.

What is Germany's BSI PointID rule?

Germany's BSI PointID standard requires that biometric photos for Reisepass and Personalausweis be captured in person at a registered authority equipped with standardised camera hardware. Online digital photos — even technically compliant ones — are not accepted for these documents.

Can I submit a selfie or smartphone photo for digital passport renewal?

It depends on the country. The UK actively encourages using a smartphone for online renewal. Australia's myPassport portal also accepts smartphone photos. For US online renewal, a digital photo is submitted via the app. In all cases, the photo must meet the technical spec — white background, ICAO proportions, no filters, neutral expression.
