Brazilian Passport Photo Requirements 2026 – Polícia Federal Rules

Brazil's Polícia Federal (PF) issues the Brazilian ePassport (Passaporte Eletrônico) and sets biometric photo requirements in line with the ICAO international standard. This guide covers every requirement — size, background, face position, the glasses ban, child photo rules, and the important difference between the passport format and the RG format.

Important: Two different formats — Passaporte vs RG

The Brazilian ePassport (Passaporte Eletrônico) uses the international ICAO standard: 35×45mm (portrait rectangle). The Carteira de Identidade (RG) uses a different format: 3×4cm (30×40mm). These are not interchangeable. If you are applying for a Brazilian passport, you need the 35×45mm ICAO size, not the 30×40mm RG size.

Core Photo Requirements for the Brazilian ePassport

  • Size: 35mm wide × 45mm tall. The ICAO standard adopted by Brazil for international travel documents. Note: some local contexts refer to passport photos as “5×7cm” or “3×4cm” — always use 35×45mm for the Passaporte Eletrônico.
  • Face coverage: The face must occupy 70–80% of the total frame height. This corresponds to roughly 32–36mm of head height (chin to crown) within the 45mm frame.
  • Background: Plain white, uniformly lit. No shadows, patterns, or gradients. The background must be distinct from the subject's skin tone.
  • Expression: Neutral, relaxed. Mouth closed. Both eyes fully open, looking directly into the lens.
  • Glasses: Not permitted. Brazil adopted ICAO biometric standards with the Passaporte Eletrônico in 2010, which includes the ban on glasses.
  • Recency: Photo must have been taken within 6 months of the application date.
  • Colour: Full colour photograph only. Black-and-white photos are not accepted for the ePassport.
  • Print quality: Printed on glossy or semi-gloss photo paper at a minimum of 300 DPI. The photo must be sharp, well-lit, and free of defects.
  • No digital retouching: Filters, skin smoothing, or any alteration to facial features or background are not permitted.

The Brazilian Passaporte Eletrônico (ePassport)

Brazil introduced its biometric ePassport — the Passaporte Eletrônico — in 2010. The document contains an RFID chip that stores the holder's biometric data, including a digital facial image, fingerprints, and personal data, in line with ICAO Doc 9303 standards. The chip enables automated border control at airports in Brazil and internationally.

Applications are processed by the Polícia Federal (PF), either at its own delegacias or at authorised agencies throughout Brazil. Appointments are required and can be booked through the official Polícia Federal website (pf.gov.br). Brazilian citizens abroad can apply at Brazilian embassies or consulates.

Standard adult passports are valid for 10 years. Children under 5 receive a 5-year passport. Children aged 5–17 receive passports valid until they turn 18, or for up to 5 years — whichever comes first. A new photo meeting all current requirements is required at every renewal.

Child Passport Photo Rules

Children of all ages — including newborn infants — must have their own passport with a compliant photo. The same ICAO requirements apply regardless of age:

  • The child must be photographed alone — no parents, hands, or accessories in frame.
  • Eyes must be fully open and looking toward the camera.
  • A plain white background is required.
  • Neutral expression — no smiling, no toys, no pacifiers visible.
  • For newborns and very young infants: lay the baby on a white sheet or use a white blanket on a flat surface. Avoid direct flash; use soft natural light or diffused artificial light.

Common Rejection Reasons

Wrong photo size (30×40mm instead of 35×45mm)

Use the 35×45mm ICAO format for the ePassport — not the 3×4cm RG format.

Glasses visible in the photo

Remove all eyewear before taking the photo. No exceptions under ICAO rules.

Background not plain white

Use a plain, uniformly lit white background. No patterns, shadows, or off-white tones.

Face too small or too large

The face must occupy 70–80% of the frame height. Recrop the image if necessary.

Photo older than 6 months

Retake the photo within 6 months of your application date.

Shadows on face or background

Use two light sources and stand at least 1 metre from the background to eliminate shadows.

Digital retouching or filters applied

Submit a natural photo. Skin smoothing, beauty filters, and colour corrections are not permitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a Brazilian passport photo?

Brazilian ePassport (Passaporte Eletrônico) photos must be 35×45mm — the ICAO international standard. This is different from the 3×4cm (30×40mm) format used for the Carteira de Identidade (RG). Make sure you use the correct size for the document you are applying for.

Is the Brazilian passport photo the same size as the RG (Carteira de Identidade)?

No. The Brazilian ePassport uses a 35×45mm (ICAO) format, while the Carteira de Identidade (RG) uses a 3×4cm (30×40mm) format. The two formats are not interchangeable.

Can I use an online tool to prepare a Brazilian passport photo?

Polícia Federal does not prohibit the use of online photo tools, provided the resulting photo meets all dimensional and quality requirements: 35×45mm, white background, face occupying 70–80% of the frame, no glasses, neutral expression, taken within 6 months.

Are glasses allowed in a Brazilian passport photo?

No. Brazil adopted the ICAO biometric standard in 2010 when it introduced the Passaporte Eletrônico. Under this standard, all glasses — including prescription glasses, tinted glasses, and sunglasses — are prohibited in passport photos.

Where can I apply for a Brazilian passport?

Inside Brazil, applications are processed at Polícia Federal (PF) delegacias or at authorised agencies. Appointments are required and can be booked through the Polícia Federal website. Abroad, Brazilian citizens can apply at Brazilian consulates or embassies.

Does a child need a separate passport photo for a Brazilian passport?

Yes. Children of all ages — including infants — require their own passport with a separate photo meeting the same ICAO 35×45mm requirements. The child must be photographed alone, with eyes open and facing the camera. Parents or hands must not appear in the photo.

Always verify current requirements with the official authority — Polícia Federal (pf.gov.br) or your nearest Brazilian embassy or consulate. Requirements are subject to change.
