Student Visa Passport Photo Requirements: A Country-by-Country Guide
Most student visas follow the ICAO 35×45mm passport photo standard — but several major study destinations use different formats. This guide compares the photo requirements for Germany, the UK, France, Canada, Australia, the USA, and the Netherlands in one place.
Non-ICAO formats to watch out for
Canada (50×70mm), UK (45×35mm portrait), and the USA (51×51mm) use non-standard formats. Always check the specific photo requirements for your destination country. Do not assume a standard European passport photo will be accepted everywhere.

Country Details
Germany – Nationales Visum (National Visa for Study)
German student visas are processed at German consulates and embassies abroad. The required format is ICAO-standard 35×45mm with a plain white or light grey background. Photos must have been taken within 6 months of the appointment date.
Germany does not currently allow fully online submission of national visa applications — physical attendance at the consulate is required, and physical photos must be brought to the appointment. Online photo generation is permitted for preparing the image.
UK – Student Visa (formerly Tier 4)
The UK Student visa is processed online through the UKVI portal. The physical size is 35mm wide × 45mm tall (identical to ICAO), but the UK lists this as 45×35mm with height first. For online applications, a digital photo is uploaded to the portal.
UKVI prohibits glasses and photo filters. The background must be white, cream, or off-white. No patterns, shadows, or other people may appear in the photo.
France – Visa Étudiant / Long-Séjour Étudiant
French student visas (long-stay, type D) follow ANTS/French standards: ICAO 35×45mm, off-white or very light grey background, no glasses, neutral expression. Applications are submitted at French consulates. A digital photo may be required for the online pre-application at France-Visas.gouv.fr.
Canada – Study Permit (IRCC)
Canada uses a 50×70mm format — larger than the ICAO 35×45mm standard. A standard European passport photo is not the correct size.
IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) requires 50×70mm photos with a white or plain light background. The face must be centred, and the photo must be taken within 6 months. Study permit applications can be submitted online via the IRCC portal with a digital photo upload, or at a Visa Application Centre.
Australia – Student Visa (Subclass 500)
Australia's Student visa subclass 500 uses the ICAO 35×45mm format. DFAT rules prohibit glasses. The background must be plain white or very light grey with no shadows. Applications are submitted online via ImmiAccount, where a digital photo upload is required.
USA – F-1 Student Visa
The USA uses a 51×51mm (2×2 inch) square format — not the ICAO 35×45mm. A standard European passport photo will not be accepted.
F-1 student visa applications are submitted through the DS-160 form on the CEAC portal, which requires a digital photo upload. The same 2×2 inch square format, white background, and no-glasses rules that apply to US passports also apply to F-1 visa photos.
Netherlands – MVV / Residence Permit for Study
The Netherlands uses ICAO-standard 35×45mm photos with a white or light grey background. For students from outside the EU/EEA, a Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf (MVV — long-stay visa) is required before arrival. Applications are submitted at a Dutch consulate. The IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) processes residence permits after arrival.
Practical Tips for Multi-Country Applications
If you are applying to universities in multiple countries, you may need photos in different formats. A practical approach is:
Take one high-resolution photo session that meets the common requirements: white background, neutral expression, no glasses, face centred and properly lit.
Generate an ICAO 35×45mm version for Germany, France, Australia, and the Netherlands from the same source image.
Generate a separate version for UK (45×35mm portrait), Canada (50×70mm), and USA (51×51mm) by cropping the same source image to the correct dimensions.
Verify the face proportion in each version: the face (chin to crown) should fill the correct percentage of the frame for each country's format.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard photo size for most student visas?
Most follow ICAO 35×45mm — including Germany, France, Australia, and the Netherlands. UK uses 45×35mm (same physical size, different convention). Canada uses 50×70mm. USA uses 51×51mm square.
Does a German student visa require a physical photo?
Yes. The German national visa (Nationales Visum) requires physical photos at the consulate appointment. Online-only submission is not standard for German visas.
Can I use the same photo for student visas in multiple countries?
Only if they share the same format. One ICAO 35×45mm photo works for Germany, France, Australia, and Netherlands. The UK, Canada, and USA each require a different size.
Does Canada use the ICAO standard for study permit photos?
No. Canada requires 50×70mm — larger than ICAO 35×45mm. A standard European passport photo is the wrong size for Canadian immigration applications.
What photo format does an Australian Student visa (subclass 500) require?
ICAO 35×45mm, plain white or very light grey background, no glasses. Digital upload via ImmiAccount for online applications.
How recent must my photo be for a student visa?
Within 6 months of application — this is a near-universal rule across Germany, UK, France, Canada, Australia, USA, and the Netherlands.
Requirements vary by country and may change. Always verify with the official consulate or immigration authority for your destination country before submitting photos. This article is informational only.
