UK Skilled Worker Visa Passport Photo Requirements
The UK Skilled Worker visa requires a photo that meets UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) standards. The format and rules differ from the international ICAO standard in one important way: the UK convention states dimensions as height × width, not width × height. Here is a complete guide to getting it right.
UK dimension convention
UK visas use 45×35mm — written as height first, then width. The physical size is the same as the ICAO 35×45mm standard (35mm wide, 45mm tall), but the UK states it in portrait orientation (height × width). This is not the same as the square US format or the taller Canadian format. Always double-check dimension order when ordering prints for UK visa applications.

Digital Photo Submission
Most UK visa applications are now handled online through the UK Visas and Immigration portal. For online applications, you upload a digital photo rather than submitting physical prints. The portal guides you through uploading and cropping the image.
When preparing a digital photo for upload, the image must be a clear, colour JPEG. The same content rules apply: white or cream background, no glasses, no filters, neutral expression. The portal may reject photos that appear blurry, dark, or incorrectly cropped.
For applications at Visa Application Centres (VACs), you may be asked to bring physical photos. VAC-specific instructions are provided with your application appointment confirmation.
Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
If your UK Skilled Worker visa is granted for more than 6 months, you will receive a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) as your physical proof of immigration status. The photo on your BRP is captured by the UK Visa Application Centre when you collect biometric data (fingerprints and a facial scan) — you do not provide a separate photo for the BRP itself.
The BRP photo is taken by trained staff at the VAC using controlled lighting and equipment. You cannot supply your own photo for the BRP.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size photo is required for a UK Skilled Worker visa?
UKVI requires a 45×35mm photo in portrait orientation — the same physical size as the ICAO 35×45mm standard but with height listed first in UK convention.
Can I wear glasses in a UK visa photo?
No. Glasses have not been permitted in UKVI photos since 2020. Contact lenses are allowed.
Do I submit a physical or digital photo for a UK Skilled Worker visa?
Most applications use digital upload via the UKVI online portal. Some VAC-based applications may require physical photos — check your appointment confirmation.
Do the same photo rules apply to other UK visa categories?
Yes. The UKVI 45×35mm format, white/cream background, no-glasses, and no-filter rules apply to Student, Family, Global Talent, and most other UK visa categories.
What is the difference between a UK visa photo and a UK passport photo?
Both are 45×35mm (portrait). HMPO (passports) recommends plain cream or light grey background; UKVI (visas) specifies white, cream, or off-white. Rules are otherwise very similar.
Can I use photo filters on a UK visa photo?
No. UKVI explicitly prohibits filters of any kind. Your photo must show your natural, unaltered appearance.
